On the final day, you’ll summit Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) for a spectacular sunrise, then descend through open savanna to Sembalun Village, completing a classic cross-route Rinjani adventure.

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Day 01, Senaru Village to Senaru Crater Rim (2,641 m)

Distance: 7.9 km
Difficulty Level: Moderate

Highest point: 2,641 m ( Senaru crater rim)
Height gain: +2,000 m

Walking Duration: 6.5 hours ascent to reach the crater rim

 

At 7:30 Am, and after having a breakfast at your hostel, the driver will pick you up and you will head to the entrance of the National Park Senaru.

 

Entrance to Position 1: The path from the entrance to Pos 1 is mainly flat and jungle. 1 km. It takes you 40 minutes to reach position 1. 

From position 1 to position 22.7 km, the treks begin to get more steep. More roots of the trees appear on the trail. It takes you 2 hours to reach position 2. After reaching Pos 2, you will make it to the stop for lunch. Amidst rainforest, and you will be surrounded by playful monkeysThe break takes 40 minutes for lunch, and you will continue to the next position.

From position 2 to position 3: there are 2.4 km, Gradually, the path begins to change after Pos 2, it is less trees and more grass. It takes you 1.5 hours to reach position 3. Stop at Pos 3 to take a little break before getting off to position 4.

From position 3 to position 4: 1.5 km, the path technical terrain with lots of big steps, and steep. It is slippery part with soft and loose earth. It takes you 40 minutes to reach position 4.

From position 4 to the Crater Rim: there are 300 m, the most challenging part, with rocky ascent path, it takes you 20 minutes to reach the Rim.

 

The Rim

Once you made it to the crater rim, you will see the huge crater filled with a lake and its special blue water surrounding the inner baby volcano was incredibly unique and picturesque. The peaks around it are massive, and you will be able to see Gilis Island in horizon and an epic sunset.

06:30 AM – Sunrise & Breakfast at Senaru Crater Rim

Wake up to sunrise views over Segara Anak Lake, the dramatic caldera walls, and Mount Baby Volcano. After breakfast and packing up camp, your guide will brief the day’s route and safety points before beginning the descent.

 

Senaru Crater Rim – Segara Anak Lake

Terrain: Steep volcanic trail, rocky sections, forested slopes

The descent follows a winding trail down the crater wall. Trekking poles are highly recommended due to loose volcanic soil. As you descend, the scenery changes dramatically, with the turquoise lake growing closer at every step.

10:30 AM – Arrival at Segara Anak Lake & Hot Springs

Arrive at Segara Anak Lake (±2,000 m), one of Indonesia’s most iconic volcanic lakes. Enjoy a rest by the lakeshore, lunch prepared by the porter team, and optional time to soak in the nearby natural hot springs, perfect for relaxing tired muscles.

Segara Anak Lake – Sembalun Crater Rim

After lunch, begin the climb toward Sembalun Crater Rim. This section is long but steady, passing through wide open landscapes with sweeping views of the caldera. The pace is slow and controlled, allowing for regular rest stops and acclimatization.

Late Afternoon – Arrive at Sembalun Crater Rim (2,639 m)

Reach Sembalun Crater Rim in the late afternoon. Set up camp and enjoy panoramic views across the caldera, Mount Rinjani summit, and surrounding highlands. Dinner is served as the sun sets, followed by a well-earned rest in preparation for the next day. Overnight camping at Sembalun Crater Rim

02:00 AM – Summit Attempt Begins

Begin the summit climb under the stars with headlamps.

Sembalun Crater Rim to Mount Rinjani Summit

Distance: ±4 km
Duration: ±3 hours ascent
Terrain: Loose volcanic scree, steep and challenging

This is the toughest section of the trek, requiring steady pacing and determination.

3km, 3 hours walk up to the summit. Woke up at 2:00 am, to have a light breakfast and head to Rinjani Summit. The ascent starts off fairly easily but soon gets steeper and sandy. This first part lasts around 1 hour. The second part gets flat for another half an hour, however it gets chilly as you are over 3000 altitude. The final part of the ascent is totally challenging, the inclination of the path is around 50 degrees with loose gravel and sandy. for every step taken, you’ll return half. Hence what makes the attack to the summit very tough.

This section requires patience and controlled footing, as the loose volcanic gravel can be slippery. Your guide will set a steady pace, allowing for short rest breaks along the way. Once back at the crater rim campsite, you’ll enjoy a well-earned breakfast and time to rest before continuing the descent.

 

Sembalun Crater Rim to Sembalun Village

After having bruch at the crater rim campsite and packing up your gear, begin the descent toward Sembalun Village. The trail gradually leads downhill through wide open savanna landscapes with expansive mountain views before transitioning into lower grassland and forested sections.

 

Descent Route Highlights

Crater Rim to Position 2

This section descends steadily through volcanic terrain and grassy slopes. The trail is generally clear and less technical than the summit route, allowing for a comfortable and rhythmic pace.

Position 2 to Sembalun Entrance Gate

After lunch, continue walking downhill for approximately 2 more hours along forest paths and village trails until reaching the Sembalun National Park entrance, marking the official end of the trek.

 

Afternoon – Trek Finish & Transfer

Upon arrival at the Sembalun entrance, your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to our office. Collect your stored luggage, change the car and continue onward to your next destination such as Senggigi, Bangsal Harbour, Mataram, Kuta Lombok, or Lombok International Airport.
