Mount Rinjani Premium Trekking Insurance 2026 – Helicopter Evacuation, Coverage & Safety Guide

Last Updated: March 2026

Trekking Mount Rinjani is one of the most rewarding experiences in Southeast Asia. However, as a high-altitude and physically demanding volcano, it also requires serious preparation — especially when it comes to safety and protection.

To improve safety standards and ensure better emergency response, the Mount Rinjani National Park officially introduced a Premium Trekking Insurance policy on March 5, 2026.

This guide explains everything you need to know in a clear and guest-friendly way.

What Is Mount Rinjani Premium Insurance?

Mount Rinjani Premium Insurance is a mandatory safety policy introduced in 2026 by Mount Rinjani National Park, designed to cover high-risk trekking activities including accident protection, search and rescue (SAR), and helicopter evacuation up to IDR 260,000,000..

Why Was Premium Insurance Introduced?

The Premium Insurance policy was introduced as a direct response to several serious incidents that occurred during the 2025 trekking season.
Notably:

  • The evacuation case of Brazilian visitor Juliana Marin (June 21, 2025)
  • The incidents involving Benedikt Emmenegger (Switzerland, July 16, 2025)
  • And Sarah Van Hulten (Netherlands, July 16, 2025)

These events highlighted challenges in emergency response time and evacuation logistics on Mount Rinjani.

As a result, the National Park Authority introduced this upgraded insurance system to:

  • Improve safety standards
  • Enhance emergency response capability
  • Enable faster evacuation, including helicopter rescue
  • Provide better financial protection for trekkers
What Is Mount Rinjani Premium Insurance?

Premium Insurance is an advanced trekking insurance product designed specifically for high-risk mountain activities. It is part of a broader safety initiative supported by the Ministry of Forestry (starting 2025/2026).

Key Coverage Includes:

✔ Accident coverage during trekking
✔ Death and permanent disability benefits
✔ Search and Rescue (SAR) costs
✔ Emergency evacuation
✔ Helicopter evacuation (key feature)

This represents a major upgrade compared to the basic National Park insurance.

Who Should Purchase Premium Insurance?

All trekkers who do NOT have personal travel insurance covering:

  • High-altitude trekking (above 3,000 meters)
  • Emergency evacuation including helicopter rescue

If you already have valid coverage, you may not need to purchase it.

What Does It Cover?

Premium Insurance provides extended protection including:

  • Medical treatment
  • Evacuation (ground & helicopter)
  • Search and rescue
  • Compensation for accident, disability, or death
  • Repatriation (return of remains)

When Is It Valid?

Valid from the moment you enter the trekking gate, until you exit the National Park, maximum duration: 4 days (4 × 24 hours)

Where Does It Apply?

Only within the official trekking routes of Mount Rinjani
Including areas such as:
Sembalun Route
Senaru Route
Pelawangan areas
Segara Anak Lake

Why Is It Important?

Because Mount Rinjani is:

  • A high-altitude volcano (3,726 meters)
  • Remote with limited road access
  • Weather-sensitive
    Physically demanding

In emergency situations, evacuation — especially helicopter rescue — can be expensive and complex.

Premium Insurance ensures faster response and financial protection.

How Does It Work?

  1. Purchased before your trek (via your trekking organizer)
  2. Registered with the National Park system
  3. Activated upon park entry
    Used only inverified emergency situations

Advantages of Premium Insurance

This upgraded policy offers significant benefits:

✔ Higher compensation limits
