Mount Rinjani Guide Routes: Choosing the Best Route for Your Adventure

Mount Rinjani has six official trekking routes, each offering a unique experience. Whether you’re looking for a challenging summit climb, scenic lake views, or a quieter off-the-beaten-path adventure, there’s a route for you!

1️. Sembalun Route – The Classic & Popular Summit Route

  • Best for: Trekkers aiming for the summit
  • Duration: 2D/1N, 3D/2N, or 4D/3N
  • Start Point: Sembalun Village (1,156m)

The Sembalun route is the most popular for reaching Mount Rinjani’s summit (3,726m). It offers:

  • A steady, open ascent through grasslands and rolling hills
  • The easiest route to the summit (though the final push is still tough)
  • Breathtaking sunrise views from the top of Indonesia’s second-highest volcano

Challenging Section: The last 5 km to the summit is very steep, with loose volcanic sand and gravel.

2️. Senaru Route – Best for Scenic Crater & Lake Views

  • Best for: Nature lovers & those who prefer a gradual climb
  • Duration: 2D/1N, 3D/2N, or 4D/3N
  • Start Point: Senaru Village (601m)

The Senaru route is an alternative entry to Rinjani that:

  • Passes through lush rainforests with waterfalls and wildlife
  • Leads to the Senaru Crater Rim with stunning views of Segara Anak Lake
  • Does not go directly to the summit (but can be combined with the Sembalun route for a full trek)

Challenging Section: The first 7 km is a steep jungle climb with high humidity.

3️. Torean Route – The Scenic & Less Crowded Route

  • Best for: Trekkers seeking a quieter, off-the-beaten-path adventure
  • Duration: 3D/2N or 4D/3N
  • Start Point: Torean Village (600m)

The Torean route is gaining popularity because it:

  • Offers the most scenic landscapes, including waterfalls and canyons
  • Is easier on the knees, with a gradual ascent/descent
  • Passes natural hot springs—perfect for relaxing tired muscles

Note: This route does not go to the summit, but it’s the best for those who want a relaxing yet scenic trek.

4️. Timbanuh Route – The Quiet & Remote Trek

  • Best for: Adventurers looking for solitude
  • Duration: 2D/1N or 3D/2N
  • Start Point: Timbanuh Village (985m)

The Timbanuh route is the less used route, making it ideal for:

  • Experiencing Rinjani without the crowds
  • Exploring untouched landscapes with stunning crater views
  • A shorter but more challenging ascent

Note: This route does not go to the summit, but offers unique perspectives of Mount Rinjani’s volcanic landscape.

5️.  Aik Berik Route – Best for a Jungle & Waterfall Adventure

  • Best for: Those who love jungle trekking and waterfalls
  • Duration: 2D/1N or 3D/2N
  • Start Point: Aik Berik Village (600m)

The Aik Berik route, located on the southern side of Mount Rinjani, offers:

  • Dense jungle trekking with waterfalls and diverse flora & fauna
  • Less steep ascents, making it more manageable for beginners
  • Great views of the crater and surrounding mountains

Note: This route does not lead to the summit, but is excellent for nature lovers and those seeking a quieter trekking experience.

6️. Tete Batu Route

  • Breathtaking Views of Segara Anak Lake – The iconic volcanic lake that shimmers in different shades of blue.
  • Duration: 2D/1N
  • Start Point: Tete Batu Village (700m)

The Tete Batu Trail offers

  • Less Crowded & More Tranquil – A perfect alternative to the more popular Rinjani routes, offering a peaceful trekking experience.
  • Diverse Landscapes – The trek passes through rainforests, waterfalls, open grasslands, and volcanic rock formations.
  • Wildlife Encounters – Home to black monkeys, tropical birds, and exotic plants.

Note: This route is not commonly used, so facilities are limited. Best for adventurous trekkers looking for a new challenge.
